No Android Jelly Bean on ARCHOS Gen9 (80 G9 / 101 G9)

Announced a few months ago (from semi-official sources) the Android 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean availability on the ARCHOS G9 tablets is no more, as the vendor has mentioned yesterday on their Facebook that there won’t be any Jelly Bean update for the ARCHOS Gen9 devices.

Archos Worldwide Marco Antunes – Unfortunately after many months of analysis and testing it has been decided that, due to the multiple hardware configurations available on our G9 range and the complexities these add, we will not release an Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” update to the G9 range tablets. The G9 Range, originally released in the autumn of 2011, running Honeycomb, saw 15 firmware updates taking it across many versions of Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich, making 4.0.26 the final firmware that will be provided to this device range.

Our understanding of the situation is that ARCHOS G9, previous generation tablets have seen a great deal of variations in the hardware platform: from TI OMAP 4430 or OMAP 4460 processors running at 1 GHz, 1.2 GHz and 1.5 GHz, flash or hard disks storage and different types of touch panel.
These seem to have created multiple problems in maintaining updates, as some serious issues with devices not booting after a firmware update were reported in the past. The effort of porting Jelly Bean to the G9 has probably been judged too high in regards to the requirements of supporting an old model.

Latest firmware for the ARCHOS 80 and 101 G9 is version 4.0.28 that was released a few days ago

For those looking for latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean support on the G9 devices, you also have the option of using unofficial firmwares, but these are less mature and not supported by ARCHOS.

The ARNOVA 10 G2 best-seller has been left with an outdated Android 2.3 Gingerbread, users have been hoping for months to get an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or more recent system, we even tried building an update on our own without much results so far. Finally, we got our hands on a new Android 4.03 ICS system and we are now preparing a custom firmware with Google Play Store and root for the Arnova 10 G2, no April fool

Our initial tests with this firmware reveal that the tablet performance is average, in par with the limited specs on the Arnova 10 G2: 512 MB RAM, RK2918 CPU. While it’s good to finally have an updated system, we feel that older Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware was actually a little smoother for GUI and most operations.

Our custom firmware will feature the following:

removed unnecessary applications

Google Play Store fixes so more application are visible/compatible

Onda has just released a major firmware update for their Onda V972 and V812 tablets based on the Allwinner A31 processor quad-core processor. This new firmware improves the device stability and allows overclocking from 1 GHz to 1.2 GHz. We have built a custom firmware based on version 2.0 updates for the Onda V972 and Onda V812 offering some system cleanup, fixes for a better application compatibility on Google Play Store and pre-installed SuperSU application (free version) to control root access.

Version 2.0 update details

Overclock Onda V972 or V812 at 1.2 GHz

Firmware update procedure

Installing a new firmware update is simple:

unpack the content of this archive and copy all the files to the root of a micro-sdcard

power down your Hyundai T7 tablet

press Vol- and Power buttons at the same time for two seconds

the tablet should start the firmware upgrade process

after two minutes the update is finished and the tablet gets shutdown

press Power button to start the tablet, this first boot is a little longer than usual (about 1 or 2 minutes)

after the boot has finished, enjoy Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on your Hyundai T7 tablet

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on the Arnova 10 G2, it’s there, finally !
We have a improved an existing ICS firmware to add root, Google Play Store support, CWR Recovery, init.d like scripts, 2 GB storage space for apps and few bugs fixes to the Arnova 10 G2.

Due to popular demand, even if work on this firmware is not completely finished we are now publishing a first release. Keep in mind that the Arnova 10 G2 has limited resources, 512 MB of RAM is a bit too low to offer perfectly smooth ICS operation, we recommend killing tasks frequently or using a task killer to help with slowdown situations.

Install procedure

Before starting, please make sure you backup all your existing apps, data and files that are on your tablet as they will be erased during the flash process. Also make sure your device is connected to the power.

We are publishing two versions of the custom firmware. The default one comes with stock recovery, there is another build with CWM Recovery (thanks fenice57)
If you don’t know what CWM is or don’t need it, just use the stock version, which should fit most users.

Step 1. Download

Download the file above and extract the custom firmware image (update.img) on your computer hard drive.

Step 2. Install and run Rockchip Flashing tool

Please follow the Rockchip Flashing tool procedure: that will explain how to download Rockchip flashing tool, unpack the archive, put your device into flashing mode and flash the custom firmware file that you have unpacked in Step 1. Use Restore button in Rockchip flasher to make sure your device gets properly erased.

Step 3. Arnova 10 G2 flashing and restart

After Rockchip flasher has transferred the custom firmware to the tablet, you will have to restart the tablet to finish installing the firmware. Finally you will be back to Arnova default startup wizard.

Notes for Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) users

Don’t worry about the messages saying "E:Can't mount /cache/recovery..." on the CWM screen at first boot.
Choose ">Wipe data/factory reset" by pushing the hardware Vol- / Vol+ button on your tablet to move the cursor down/up, use Power button to select.
On the second screen, use again the tablet hardware buttons to select "> Yes -- delete all user data".
Let the tablet format the /data and /cache partitions.
Once "Data wipe complete." message appears, scroll to "> Reboot system now" option.
From a running Android system, you can use ArcTools to reboot into Recovery, start ArcTools application, select “Reboot” button in the upper toolbar, choose “Reboot Recovery”, then click on “Select Reboot” button. If SuperSU access request window shows, click on “Grant” button to allow ArcTools to reboot your system.
